Suburban

This page is a tribute to Suburban… the original SUV.
It was introduced in 1935 and is the oldest, continuously produced vehicle nameplate in the industry. There are many configurations and styles but my Suburban Seats 8 passengers including the driver however, you can order a 9 passenger (bench in the front) vehicle in case your family is a soccer team!

Mine is Black on Black with Leather interior:

UPDATE NOV 2023

Rebuilt Transmission after a massive failure.  DEAD Tranny.

Added a Corsa cold air intake with a Dry Donaldson Powercore Air filter.

My particular model is a 4 Wheel Drive powered by a  5.3L V-8 VVT DI  with Active Fuel Management (L83)  mated to a GM 6L80 transmission. Together these allow Suburban to produce 355 HP with 383 Ft/lbs of Torque.

The 2017 Suburban replaces the LTZ trim level name with Premier — Chevy’s new range-topping trim. But the change is in name only, as the new Premier trim level inherits all of the features, equipment, and options from the Suburban LTZ, without becoming any more premier premium. In addition, the 2017 Suburban gets rid of the LS badge from the exterior of LS-trim vehicles.

On the outside, the 2017 Chevrolet Suburban doesn’t see any styling changes or updates with the exception of new colors, wheels, (aforementioned) badges and roof rails:

Deleted Colors:

  • Slate Grey Metallic
  • Sable Metallic
  • Green Envy Metallic
  • Brownstone Metallic

New Colors:

  • Blue Velvet Metallic
  • Pepperdust Metallic

Two new 22-inch wheel choices are added to the 2017 Chevy Suburban lineup:

  • 22-inch Ultra Bright machined aluminum wheels with Bright Silver finish available exclusively on the Premier (1LZ) trim
  • 22-inch, 7-spoke Silver wheels with Chrome inserts available on all trims

Another set of 22-inch premium painted wheels with chrome inserts become available on 1LT (LT) and 1LZ (Premium) trim levels of the 2017 Suburban, but they will not be available at the start of production.

In addition, black roof rack cross rails are added to the Texas Edition Package and All-Season Package and front active aero shutters are incorporated as a standard feature across all trim levels of the 2017 Suburban. The shutters are designed to improve aerodynamics by closing automatically during high-speed driving and opening when the engine needs more air for cooling purposes. To note, the active shutters are not visible from the outside of the vehicle.

The remaining updates and changes to the 2017 Suburban are to its in-vehicle technology:

  • The heated and cooled seats are replaced with heated and vented seats on the Premier (1LZ) trim level
  • The MyLink infotainment systems (IO5 and IO6) gets these new features and changes:
    • Pandora is removed as an embedded app
    • Teen Driver feature is added
    • App Shop is added
    • Rear Seat Reminder customization added
    • Low Speed Forward Automatic Braking is included with Enhanced Driver Alert Package on the 1LS trim. The feature is standard on LT (1LT) and on Premier (1LZ) trim levels when Adaptive Cruise Control is not ordered.
  • The Rear Seat Entertainment System is overhauled:
    • RCA audio/video jacks and SD card slot are removed
    • New video voiceover feature for the visually and hearing impaired
    • HDMI/MHL connector added to attach devices to project on the in-vehicle screens
    • Digital headphones added, while the previous rear seat accessory headphones are deleted
    • The in-vehicle Wi-Fi system now allows devices to wirelessly project onto the vehicle’s screens using Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) technology. Only one device can wirelessly project at a time.
    • 2nd USB port with capability of charging up to 2.1-amp (such as for an Apple iPad) is added to the back of console

My personal upgrades include:

Pedal Commander  – This is a throttle response controller. Basically what it does is allows you to remove throttle body response delays on your electronic accelerator pedal. Effectively, it allows your engine to respond faster so your car can accelerate faster! It also has the reverse effect in ECO-Mode.

Eco-Mode allows you to save a lot on gas.  I can get 18 l/100km driving in ECO-Mode where normally I would be getting 22 l/100 km in the city. Unbelievably, I have had it as low as 11 l/100 km on the hwy.
Update:: Removed Pedal Commander – caused me some throttle body calibration issues – got sick of having to pull over and re-start my truck…

My Winter tires are  BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A® KO2 Tire
The BF’s are amazing tires but a little too noisy for me for daily driving. So I use them for Winter only…or if I decide to go offroading….which never happens lol..

These are my Summer /. All Season tires….Awesome when its dry and in the rain and snow – Fantastic tire.

How to Determine If Your GM SUV Has ZW7 Premium Smooth Ride Suspension or Z55 Autoride Suspension

GM’s full-sized SUVs, the Chevrolet Avalanche, Tahoe and Suburban, the GMC Denali, Yukon and Yukon XL and the Cadillac Escalade, came with several different suspension options. It can be confusing when buying replacement shocks and suspension to try to figure out if your SUV has a premium Smooth Ride or Autoride.

Every vehicle that GM produces comes with a sticker listing the alpha-numeric codes of all of the vehicle’s options. These are known as RPO codes and can be very useful when trying to determine what type of suspension your GM SUV has. There are 3 different “styles” of suspensions that these vehicles come with.

Conventional: there are numerous RPO codes for different types of conventional suspensions, the most well-known being Z71 and Z66. These suspension codes are interchangeable and standard aftermarket shocks will fit any type of conventional suspension. This suspension uses the most basic components: a coil spring or torsion bar spring with a conventional gas charged shock absorber. The Bilstein Heavy Duty and 5100 Series or the KYB Monomax and Gasajust are popular performance replacements. The KYB GR2 and Monroe Reflex and Sensatrac are good quality OEM replacement shocks.

Premium Smooth Ride: indicated by the RPO code ZW7. This suspension uses a conventional suspension in the front, but the rear uses a self-contained, self-leveling Nivomat shock in the rear. ZW7 equipped trucks come with a softer spring in the rear since the Nivomat self-leveling system does some of the work of holding the truck up. Replacing a ZW7 Nivomat unit with a standard shock requires also replacing the spring, otherwise the truck will sag in the rear and have a much harsher ride and potentially dangerous handling.

Autoride: indicated by the RPO code Z55. This suspension system uses electronic shocks in the front that automatically adjust to road conditions, becoming stiffer or softer as necessary. The rear will use an electronically controlled self-leveling air shock that is monitored by ride height sensors and inflated remotely from an on-board air compressor.
